Traditional Armenian clothing

Traditional Armenian clothing, known as taraz, is an important part of Armenia’s cultural heritage and reflects the country’s history, identity, and traditions. These garments were not only practical but also symbolic, often showing a person’s region, social status, and marital condition.

Women typically wore long, colorful embroidered dresses called halav, along with aprons, decorated headwear, and silver jewelry. In colder weather, they added velvet or wool outer garments. Men’s clothing included a simple shirt, loose trousers, a vest or jacket, and sometimes a heavier coat like a chokha, along with boots and hats.

Traditional clothing varied by region. For example, styles from Artsakh often featured bright colors and rich embroidery, while those from Syunik were usually darker and more layered.

Today, taraz is mainly worn during weddings, festivals, and cultural events, and it remains a strong symbol of Armenian identity and heritage.
